Union add Dutch midfielder Roland Alberg

The Union may have their first preseason game against Jacksonville Armada FC tomorrow, but Earnie Stewart and the rest of the front office are still making moves. Yesterday, the Union officially announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Roland Alberg. The Union have acquired Alberg via Total Allocation Money, (TAM) for a two-year deal. Alberg comes from the Dutch side ADO Den Haag who play in the Dutch Eredivisie. Sporting director Earnie Stewart had a job working as a director of football affairs for another club in the league before he came to Philadelphia. So being in that league before, Earnie was able to discover the talented midfielder.

Alberg totaled 16 goals in three seasons with ADO Den Haag. Comparing him to the rest of the Union players, Roland is like attacking midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta. However, Roland is quicker than Tranquillo, so Roland may play on the wing. With that being said, either Sebastien Le Toux or Chris Pontius may lose their starting job to the new Dutch midfielder. The thing about Alberg is because of his versatility, he will be able to play multiple positions on the field, as well as forcing other players to step up so that they would earn a starting role. Stewart has referred to Alberg as a possible “push player”, but the feeling is he still will most likely be a starter.

With Alberg’s signing many fans are wondering if he is the big player the Union have been searching for, or are there more possible moves to come? With more rumors swirling fans will have to look forward to that, and that the Union will be taking on Jacksonville Armada FC in their first preseason game tomorrow at 6 PM.
