Phinally! Phillies top pitching prospect, Jake Thompson will be getting the ball on Saturday against the Padres at pitcher friendly Petco Park. He comes up with a very good resumé having gone 36-22 in 92 career minor league starts with a 3.06 ERA.
Thompson was a key cog last summer in the Cole Hamels deal. He started out 5-1 in 7 starts with a 1.80 ERA in Reading last year. He then followed it up this season with Lehigh Valley going 11-5 with a 2.50 ERA in 21 starts.
The Dallas Texas native started out his career as more of a strikeout pitcher but has worked himself into more of a groundball pitcher. He comes with a powerful two-seam fastball, a nice curveball, and wrinkles in a changeup.
He will look to build on his recent success having gone 7-0 in his last 10 starts with a 1.32 ERA. He comes up as the first of hopefully a handful of prospects getting the call up as the season begins to wind down.
