Part four of our New to the Nest series focuses on the Swizz Army knife and rookie selection of Donnel Pumphrey.
Bio/Contract: The Eagles selected running back Donnel Pumphrey after trading up in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. Although Pumphrey is a tiny 5’8″ – 176 lbs, his production in college stands tall. Donnel signed his 4-year contract worth $2,975,888 with the Eagles on May 12, 2017, and will look to learn from his NFL Comp and veteran teammate, Darren Sproles.
College Career: Pumphrey was certainly a weapon in his playing days at San Diego State. In fact, after four years at the college level, he became the leading rusher in Division I-A history with 6,405 rushing yards. The second-team All American will hope to take his skills as a dual weapon into the next level.
Projection: In Pumphrey’s rookie season, we expect him to be used in non-crucial situations and get more carries as the season wears on. Pumphrey is going to have to earn the trust of the coaching staff before he becomes part of the weekly game plan. This is especially true in the log-jam of backs the Eagles have on their roster. However, in training camp is where he may be able to win the kick and punt return starting job.
When it comes to 2017 for Pumphrey, he will certainly see SOME playing time as running backs coach Duece Staley likes to rotate his guys in during the game. The question is how many reps will he get? One thing that is known for sure is that even as small as he is, Pumphrey is durable, and has a knack for the end zone. Below is a true guess of production for the upcoming season.
- Part five of the series will feature one of the most under-the-radar moves of the offseason. The trade with Baltimore for Timmy Jernigan.
