Returning this summer, is our New to the Nest series which profiles the free agents and rookies the Eagles brought in this past offseason. We aim to recap the player’s bio and contract terms, and make a healthy projection for the upcoming season. So without further ado, we kick off the first of a 12-part series with new comer LeGarrette Blount.
Bio/Contract: The Eagles officially signed running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal on May 18th, after a career season with the Patriots. The deal is worth $1.25 million, and acts as a stop-gap for the Eagles as they search for their long-term answer to line up behind Carson Wentz.
Blount will enter his 9th season with his fourth football team as he joins the Eagles in a revamped offense for the young quarterback. He brings a veteran status and unique rushing ability.
Career: LeGarrette Blount steps into this upcoming season having played in 100 career regular season, and eight post season games on his way to two Super Bowl rings with New England. His career regular season stat line is listed below.
Projection: Blount is a powerful back with surprising speed and agility. He’ll even hurdle some defenders if they try to hit him in the legs. The Eagles will look to use him specifically in short yardage, goal line, and late-game situations. It is unclear if he will be the feature back or a part of a committee in Philadelphia at this point. The coaching staff needs to mix in some of the younger talent to see if they have an answer at the position long-term.
That being said, we fully expect Blount to be the week one starter and keep the job. It is unlikely he averages the 18.7 carries per game he did last season. If Blount is able to play in all 16 games, it will be the third time he does so in his career. Our 2017 projected stat line for running back LeGarrette Blount is as follows:
- Part two of the series will be released on 6/24 and feature the exciting first round selection Derek Barnett.
