Early Bird Roster Predictions 2017

The Eagles must cut their roster to 53 players by 4 PM on Saturday evening. After a 38-31 win to improve the Eagles to 2-1 this pre-season, a lot of young talent has stood out such as RB Corey Clement and returning vets like Mychal Kendricks. With the final 53 starting to take shape after a few cuts this afternoon, let’s take a stab at an early prediction for the Eagles opening day roster.

Key: Names in Green is a notable keeper. Names in Red is a notable cut.

OFFENSE (25)

Quarterbacks (3)

  • It’ll be interesting to see if Nick Foles goes on IR to start the season. If so, The Eagles will bring in a free-agent.

Starter: Carson Wentz
Backup: Nick Foles
Backup: Matt McGloin

Running Backs (4)

  • Clement has been very impressive, stealing reps at RB and strong in the return game. Pumphrey needs more time.

Starter: LeGarrette Blount/Darren Sproles
3rd Down Back: Darren Sproles
Backup: Wendell Smallwood
Backup: Corey Clement  –  Donnell Pumphrey (practice squad)

Wide Receivers (6)

  • After trading away Jordan Matthews, the Eagles WRs look a lot different from last season. Agholor will fill the slot position and rookie Shelton Gibson gets cut.

Starter: Alshon Jeffrey
Starter: Torrey Smith
Slot: Nelson Agholor
Backups: Mack Hollins, Marcus Johnson, Bryce Treggs

Tight Ends (3)

  • Trey Burton can turn out to be a major X factor given the chance. It’s time for him to break out as Celek fills more of a mentoring role.

TE1: Zach Ertz
TE2: Trey Burton
Backup: Brent Celek

Offensive Line (9)

  • This group hasn’t had many pre-season reps together and struggled to run the ball. Protection for Wentz will be a big key to the Eagles success this season, they have one of the best tackle tandems in the NFL.

LT: Jason Peters
LG: Isaac Seumalo
C: Jason Kelce
RG: Brandon Brooks
RT: Lane Johnson
Backup: Chance Warmack
Backup: Stefen Wisnienwski
Backup: Dillon Gordon
Backup: Halapoulivaati Vaitai

DEFENSE (24)

Defensive Line (9)

  • Finding depth this offseason has been a focus. The defensive line has really gotten after the QB this preseason and hopefully, it transfers.

Backup NT: Beau Allen
Backup DT: Destiny Vaeao – Justin Hamilton (practice squad)
Backup DEs: Derek Barnett, Chris Long, Steven Means – Alex McCallister (practice squad)

Line Backers (6)

  • Mychal Kendricks has returned to form and will be a huge piece to the Linebacker group’s success. KGH makes the list as a special teamer but Don Cherry sticks around.

MLB: Jordan Hicks
OLB: Mychal Kendricks
Backup LBs: Najee Goode, Joe Walker, Kamu Grueger-Hill Don Cherry, Nate Gerry
(practice squad)

Corner Backs (6)

The Ronald Darby acquisition shook up the lineup. He is certainly better at finding the ball and closing speed but may gamble a lot. Either way, it’s an upgrade from what they had. With Sidney Jones on IR, CJ Smith III rounds out the depth.

Outside: Ronald Darby
Outside: Jalen Mills
Slot: Patrick Robinson
Backups: Jaylen Watkins
(moved to CB), Rasul Douglas, CJ Smith III (practice squad)

  • A safety tandem willing to deliver the BOOM while Corey Graham has filled the backup role very well.

PRACTICE SQUAD (10)
