The Eagles are coming off a 7-9 season that started on such a high note after completing a 3 game win streak into the bye week. What followed was a suspension to their best offensive tackle, regression by their young QB, and a defense who’s pass rush was never consistent and corners who could not get the job done in the secondary. Doug Peterson is staying put, and Carson Wentz is the Eagles QB of the future. However, in a strong NFC division that saw two teams make the playoffs, the Eagles must improve drastically in some areas. Wentz needs weapons, consistent weapons, and the defense needs so playmakers on the outside. The Eagles currently have $10.84 Million in cap space. Here are the moves we can expect to see:
CUTS – Connor Barwin- DE, Mychal Kendricks-OLB, Leodis McKelvin-CB, Ryan Mathews-RB
RESTRUCTURE – Jason Peters-LT (to free up space)
RESIGNING – Nolan Carrol-CB, Bryan Braman-ST, Najee Goode-ILB.
FREE TO WALK – Bennie Logan – DT will be allowed to test free agency because he will be able to make a lot of money on the open market. Schwartz thinks Beau Allen can fill in for Logan as he did for some of the season
BONUS EXTENSION – Howie Roseman will extend WR Jordan Mathews contract this season, as he will be a free agent in 2018, and as we have seen WR can command a lot on the open market.
Don’t expect the Eagles to be big spenders in free agency, those days are over. Like Howie said in a press conference a few months ago, he is looking for young guys (around 26, 27 years old) who can come in and continue to grow with the team. Only name of an older player to keep an eye on is WR Desean Jackson, his history with the team and players may entice Roseman even though in the end I think he passes. Here are some players I think the Eagles will look to sign in free agency.
WR- Kenny Stills (MIA), Kenny Britt (LA)
DE- William Gholston (TB)
CB- Morris Claiborne (DAL), Dre Kirkpatrick(CIN)
Still very early to predict who will go where in the draft, and how things will shake up with trades but a few guys to keep an eye on in the first round.
RB Dalvin Cook: explosive running ability, can catch the ball out of the backfield very well, dangerous speed in the open field
WR Corey Davis: Don’t let the small school fool you, this guy can play. Strong physical WR who can make a play on the ball in the air. Great hands and good awareness for jump balls
DE Derek Barnett: Absolute QB killer. Holds record for most sacks in a three-year span. Physically gifted, great hands at the point of attack.
CB Marshon Lattimore: Best corner in the draft in my option. Physical corner prefers to jam at the line, decent tackler with a lot of upside.
Overall, it should be an interesting offseason. The Eagles must bring in weapons for an offense that at times last year was hard to watch. Carson Wentz must improve, he showed some great promise in 2016, but must make sure the turnovers and mechanical issues improve, or this team will fail. On defense, some fresh blood might be what Jim Schwartz defense needs. A more consistent pass rush will allow the corners not to be exposed. This is a make or break offseason for Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles.
